Right from the Start

Playthings and Activities
from birth to 4 years

We know now that how we respond to our children and the stimulation that we provide in the early years sets the stage for their lifelong development.

When a toddler takes his first steps we, as parents, often call up friends and family and mark the special day in our diaries. We know that this marks a significant stage in a child’s growth but are often not aware that many of these markers are also developmental guides and red flags; These early years between birth to four years are when children are most receptive to learning and the right stimulation can help develop first responses and primary skills.

Section separators create pauses in the narrative and tables are used to map emotional, physical or sensorial skills; a simple, yet strong, duotone colour language is used on photographs; ‘blurbs’ of dialogues and cartoons, explain ‘difficult to talk about’ topics.

Parents often attempt to provide children with playthings from the abundance available in the market place but may not always be sure whether the toys match a child’s emerging skills at each stage. Right from the Start is a guide that makes the link between playthings and activities and their development value, logical and explicit.
The design of the book use various devices to reflect the approach followed by the author, Mandira Kumar, who along with Aditi Dilip, the illustrator, was closely involved in the design process and decisions. The end result, we believe, is a book that was ‘just right’ in its use of type hierarchies, line weights and illustrations.
