This book developed as part of a project sponsored by the GOI through the Crafts Council of India to document the state of stone craft in India in the 1990s. Celbrating stone craft, it offers a vignette into understanding the origins of the different types of stone available across India, its regional variations, strengths and weaknesses.
The first volume of the book is dedicated to an overview of the craft, looking at its historical evolution from the shilpa shastra tradition. The book showcases a range of traditional architectural elements: iconic jaalis, windows pillars, niches and brackets as well as every day use products such as the mortar and pestle. A second volume is a geographical, state-wise documentation of the craft tradition. With archival images and drawings, contemporary photographs and tabular content, this comprehensive book goes beyond being a ready reckoner; it is designed as a useful and creative resource for craft designers, architects and stone manufacturers.
